She was frightened, alone and didn’t want other children to be in the same situation. This is a story of a 19-year-old cancer victim Maggie Miller from Queensland, Australia.
“I’d been undergoing headaches for weeks and it had made me miss a lot of school,” Maggie said.
She was only 11 and cursed not being with her friends, or fit to dance and play netball. Normally, all she desired to do was be outdoor playing in the sun. But sadly, all she could do now was sit in a dark and silent room.
Her mum had consulted her to many doctors who declared she was fine. But her mum was resolute and needed another view. Eventually, one sent her for an MRI scan.
So the biggest dilemma started here. They found Maggie had grade-four ependymoma and ganglioma. A tumor the size of an orange was lying on her brain.
Therapy started right away, and Maggie endured five surgeries, two rounds of chemotherapy and 35 bouts of radiation. Her mum slept next to her in the hospital every night to keep her company.
Survival Story of a Cancer Victim
After a long and severe treatment of six months, the tumor had gone and the doctors declared that Maggie was going to be good. But she felt far from it. She still experienced short-term memory loss and fatigue.
Finally, when she returned to school, she was behind and her friends didn’t want to socialize with her anymore. She had no one to talk to, so she spent hours on the internet trying to find a platform to speak to people who had experienced the same things as she did, but there was no one.
Suddenly, she came up with an idea to make her website for young people who had been affected by cancer. She got busy and started The Cancer Talk Foundation and was excited to hear from so many others who’d had similar experiences.
She wishes she’d never had to go through cancer, but now she’s so glad that she is doing something to help tell others that they aren’t alone.
