If you’re watching Netflix drama Mindhunter, which is based on a true story of a man who founded the art of profiling serial killers, you must be wondering just how much of it is true and who are Netflix’s Mindhunter real characters? Who are Holden Ford and Bill Tench? Are they real FBI agents?
The three leading roles on Mindhunter are based on real people, though they aren’t accurate reflections. The two FBI special agents from the bureau’s Behavioral Science Unit are Holden Ford and Bill Tench, performed by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, respectively. Those two agents are based on John E. Douglas (who co-authored the book on which the drama is based) and Robert K. Ressler.
The third one is Anna Torv who plays psychologist Wendy Carr based on Dr. Ann Wolbert Burgess. Burgess is a professor who investigates trauma and abuse’s impact on victims, especially when it comes to serial killers, rapists, and kidnappers. She worked widely with the FBI’s Behavioral Sciences Unit throughout her career.

Holden Ford
Holden Ford, the enticing leading man of Mindhunter, performed well by Jonathan Groff is based on John E. Douglas. Ford leads a similar path as an agent in the FBI’s Behavioral Sciences Unit, traveling the country to interrogate some of the most notorious outlaws in American history.
Bill Tench
Tench performed by Holt McCallany, was inspired massively by Robert K. Ressler, a Chicago-born FBI agent who joined the Bureau in 1970. Ressler was also a member of the Behavioral Sciences Unit in the ’70s and is known for inventing the term “serial killer.”
Ressler also interrogated serial killers in the ’80s and created the nation’s first computer database of unsolved crimes, which assisted arrest those who crossed state lines as they killed.
Dr. Wendy Carr
Known as the voice of reason and logic on Mindhunter, Anna Torv performs psychologist Wendy Carr based on Dr. Ann Wolbert Burgess. Burgess is a scholar who studies trauma and abuse impact on victims, particularly when it comes to serial killers, rapists, and kidnappers. She still teaches at Boston College.
Furthermore, there are actors performing onscreen tales of real-life serial killers: Dennis Rader (aka the BTK Killer), who murdered 10 people in Kansas between 1974 and 1991, performed by Sonny Valicenti; Edmund Emil Kemper III (aka the Co-ed Killer), who assassinated several women in the 1970s, along with his mother and paternal grandparents, performed by Cameron Britton; and Jerry Brudos (aka the Shoe Fetish Slayer), who killed at least four women in Oregon in the late ’60s, performed by Happy Anderson.
