Taylor Swift’s ‘Soon You’ll Get Better’ Made People Emotional

Our beloved Taylor Swift was one of the various artists on Saturday’s One World: Together At Home concert special, an effort started to raise money for the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund. The six-hour event on April 18, which was supported by Lady Gaga, also incorporated at-home performances from Celine Dion, Lizzo, and Michelle Obama. But Taylor Swift’s song “You’ll get better made everyone extra emotional.

Soon You’ll Get Better

When it was Taylor Swift’s turn to take the control of the screen and audience attention, fans were moved—and very surprised—that she chose to sing, “Soon You’ll Get Better,” a song so special, she’d earlier stated she didn’t imagine she’d ever played it live.

“Soon You’ll Get Better” appears on Swift’s last album Lover, and it was inspired by her mother’s struggle with cancer. “Almost every decision I make, I talk to her about it first. So obviously it was a really big deal to ever speak about her illness,” Swift revealed the inspiration of composing the song. “While she was going through treatment, they found a brain tumor. And the symptoms of what a person goes through when they have a brain tumor is nothing like what we’ve ever been through with her cancer before. So it’s just been a really hard time for us as a family.”

In a Sirius XM Town Hall just after Lover premiered, she confirmed that it’s a most difficult piece of music for her because of how devoted the lyrics and the emotion behind it are. “I don’t know if I’ll ever play it live,” she said at the time, according to Billboard. “It’s just really difficult for me. It was hard to write. It’s hard to sing. It’s hard to listen to for me. But sometimes, music is like that. Sometimes it’s not just about stuff that was pleasant to feel.”

But Swift still picked it for One World: Together At Home, where it took on a different sense and relieved people staggering from the consequences of the pandemic. She got an overflow of love from her fans and followers, who took to Twitter to applaud her for such a solid performance. “The fact that Taylor said she wouldn’t perform Soon You’ll Get Better cause it was hard for her and her family and chooses that song to perform for One World….. wow. Just one word I have to say: Proud,” one follower wrote.
